Justice Wiley W. Manuel Scholarship

Established in honor of the Hastings alumnus, former Assistant Attorney General and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. Justice Manuel (1927 – 1981) was the first African American to serve on the high court. Justice Manuel was known for his dedication to pro bono work. This scholarship is awarded to a second year student demonstrating financial need, academic achievement and community involvement. Married students, students with children and ethnic students are encouraged to apply.

A resume, autobiographical statement and typewritten essay must be submitted.

Essay topic: A concise and well organized statement outlining background, current interests, community involvement and career goals after graduation from Hastings.
Length of essay: No more than 2,000 words.
Number of finalists: Up to six.

  1. This scholarship requires an essay as part of the application process. For this scholarship, the Scholarship Selection Committee will read all applications and select a pre-determined number of finalists. Off-campus selection committees established for this scholarship will select the recipient from the finalists.
